Dissertations

M Th. : Outreach to Muslims and Hindus in India by Christian Missions
The dissertation observes that Christian missions have seen their greatest success amongst the Tribal Communities and the people known as Harijans or Outcastes. The reason for this is seen in the negative view of other faiths shared by the early pioneers who arrived when these faiths were in a demoralized condition. The message shared appealed to those who had no vested interest in the dominant faiths. But regrettably caused considerable offense and resulted in the major religious groupings turning away from this culturally dominated message. To successfully communicate to the major religious groupings requires a respect for their culture as well as the positive aspects of their faiths particularly in their community and social aspects.

D. Miss. An Organizational Study of the United Bible Societies 1984-1989
The Bible Society movement has a long and honorable history of providing reliable translations of the original Hebrew and Greek documents of the Christian scriptures into many languages and dialects around the world. Throughout the history from 1804-1989 many organizational changes and adjustments have been made in response to the changing environment. The 1990s are another period of change and adjustment. The dissertation examines the UBS using the insights offered by Professor Mintzberg of Mc Gill University in Montreal. First a structural analysis is made to determine what form the Bible Society is currently operating under. Following this an examination of the "Power Structures" within the Bible Society is made to determine how the Bible Society operates. In the light of these understandings recommendations are made as to how the Bible Society might adjust to the needs of the coming decades as well as meet the financial and other pressures contingent on the Organisation from without.

Ph.D., Simon Fraser University, Vancouver 1999

Christian Mission in India: An evaluation of contributions made to social change.

The dissertation seeks to link the present development in India by Christian agencies to the world view brought by Western missionaries which originates in the teachings of the Reformation. These particularly emphasized the worth of the individual before God ( the image of God in man), the virtues of integrity hard work and thrift as well as the value and importance of philanthropy and sharing. These ideals have motivated the present Christians from groups such as the Tamils in South India to take the gospel and development to the underprivileged in Central and Northern India.

Marketing Consultant :United Bible Societies (UBS) Regional Centre Hong Kong 1984-1995.

The UBS is an international partnership of Bible Societies. In Hong Kong they had a Regional Centre with the purpose of sharing with the 17 national Bible Societies of the Asia Pacific Region. The group in Hong Kong consisted of a number of specialized consultants in the fields of Translation, Management, and Marketing.

Over the course of the 11 year period the Marketing Consultants instituted seminars and made regular personal visits to the Societies with the objective of:

Building strong locally based societies who would
       - Relate to the Churches and missions of that country in order to
       - Effectively communicate the message of the Scriptures to their peoples.
The challenges posed were:
             - An initial over dependence of outside funding and program ideas
             - Weak management and personnel policies
             - Inadequate production, pricing, and distribution methods.

Through a series of seminars for national distribution officers regular visits and mentoring it was possible to realize many of these goals.

By the end of the 11 year period the transition from dependence to national identity and effectiveness had been established so that following my departure no new Marketing Consultant was appointed.

Previous experiences include Regional Superintendent for Interserve 1977-1983, Bible Teacher and Lecturer New Delhi 1971-1976; Administrator Noor Eye Project Kabul Afghanistan 1968-1971; Book store Manager Cooksville Ontario 1965-1967; Manager Evangelical Literature Depot Calcutta India 1963-1965; Manager Masihi Ishaˇ¦at Khana (Christian Publishing House) Lahore Pakistan 1956- 1958.
