Course Description

The course will give an introduction to Leadership studies. The student will be encouraged to examine his or her own own personality qualities then to go on to apply these to principles develop a personal Leadership Profile. Further opportunities will then be presented to apply these insights to Church and Mission situations by understanding and analyzing the nature of the dynamics operating within these organizations Insights will then be offered into how leadership can be applied to institutions. The course will conclude with the opportunity to gather this information together and apply it to a suggested situation in a living situation and then develop from there means and methods to show leadership within that context.

Course Objectives:

As a result of studying this course the student will:

Be able to understand him or herself better by a method of self assessment leading to an understanding of their own personal temperament characteristics

The student will further learn to see the pattern of God's dealings in their lives developing him or her into a leader who can minister to others

Learn to recognise the dynamics operating within Church and mission situations so as to be better able to utilize these in an effective ministry.

Learn the basics of leadership in operation studying the principles of responsibility, delegation, accountability and organization

Course Content:

The course will consist of a number of modules:

Personal Assessment : Developing an understanding of the personality traits present within him or herself by utilising an assessment questionnaire approach. Assistance will be given in analyzing the data and through discussion to open the way for further development of these insights.

Personal Development Profile . Following material prepared by Dr R Clinton assistance will be given to build up a personal profile showing how the person is built up into a leader through different processes in life.

Church and Mission Dynamics. Based on information developed by Dr S Lingenfelter churches and organizations will be analysed to gain a better understanding of their dynamics of operation. Insights will be given into the basics of taking responsibility, delegating responsibility and requiring accountability.

Course Methodology, Assignments and Grading

The course will consist of lectures, assignments, seminars and evaluations in class sessions. This will be followed by required Library research and assignments. These assignments will then be presented in seminar sessions leading to evaluation and learning opportunities.

Assignments

Module 1: will require the filling in of an assigned questionaire, This will lead to a self evaluation which will reveal the basic temperament of the student. The student will then be required to study the characteristics of this particular temperament and so assess their leadership abilities and qualities within its confines.

Module 2: will lead to the development of a Personal Life Timeline with an understanding of the process items relating to this and so gain a knowledge of his or her development pattern with insights in how to this may project further in future.

Module 3: will result in a study of the Church and Mission backgrounds known to the student and insights to be gained from analyzing the dynamics present within these.

Module 4: will require the development of an organizational chart relevant to the students knowledge of his Church or Mission.

Class Assignments

Module 1: Assessment questionnaire and finished temperament profile

Module 2: Biblical Character time line

Personal time line
Indian Christian or secular leader time line

Module 3: Church or Mission dynamics diagram with description

Module 4: Organizational Chart of Church or Mission in which student has worked.

Major Paper

Each student will be required to development a paper to be completed and handed in by March lst 2001.
The paper will be developed along the following lines:

The student is to choose a particular situation relevant to his or her own background and/or what they understand their future assignment might be.

Suggestions are

    • A particular church setting e.g. a pastorate or supervisory position
    • An organizational setting such as Mission organization linked in with Church Planting and evangelism.
    • A teaching situation in a Bible College
    • Any other situation known or envisaged by the student. Please consult with the lecturer on this.
    1. Within this situation the student is to project for him or herself a role that they will fill e.g. executive leader, subordinate leader, supportative person.

    2. Taking this position the student is to show how they would contribute to this situation by:
      • Personal Profile. In the light of an understanding of his or her own personal temperament what role they might play in the situation.
      • An understanding of the dynamics present in the situation. There is to be a realistic assessment based on knowledge of known current Indian situations rather than a theoretical ideal model. E.g. authoritarian control, dynastic succession, Western management models, democratic decision making, small inner circle etc.
      • Project the future mission of this organization and how it might be accomplished by utilizing insights from the leadership studies pursued.
      • Develop an organizational chart of this organization showing the role that the student would fulfill and those of subordiantes giving indications of responsibilities and a means of accountability.
