Cultural Anthropology

Course Description

This course will develop the study of Cultural Anthropology in three phases.

Introductory Material: Why study Cultural Anthropology, Ethnocentracism Communication challenge. Ordering of Society Ecology determinants. Cycle of development, Personal life cycles. Kinship, Ethnic groupings, Marriage customs Institutions in Society; Associations, Legal Systems, Political Systems, Economic Systems, Religious Systems, World View. The course will consist of presentations, group discussions and interactive materials made over five days followed by an written examination and a further paper to be presented within one month of completion of the course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

As a result of studying this course the student will:

  1. Understand his own cultural background better
  2. Be able to move effectively live within other cultures
  3. Develop strategies for presenting the Gospel of people groups of cultural background other than his or her own
  4. Begin the process of planting Churches which are sensitive to the needs of other people overcoming many of the obstacles that give rise to syncretism and other undesirable characteristics of some Church planting ministries
COURSE CONTENT:

The course will consist of a series of lectures supplemented by additional readings, interaction in class; a final written examination; the presentation of a written paper to be completed following the course.

COURSE METHODOLOGY, ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING

Assignments: The course will require students to do the background reading in the Library. This reading will be monitored and assessed by a written assignment which are to be handed in within one month of the completion of the course. Suitable questions to be answered are detailed in Appendix A.

There will be a final examination. The final examination will cover information given throughout the course as well as reflective presentations over the whole area of other faiths.

A written assignment will be required. The assignment is as follows:

Choose a people group that you are informed about;

Describe a some of the major cultural characteristics of this group

Develop an evangelistic strategy to present the gospel to this group taking into account the culture

Anticipate challenges that the group will present when a Church is established and outline some steps to be taken to meet these challenges
