Bangalore-2008

We arrived this time by train. Last year we flew but now the location of the airport has been changed. The new grand International Bangalore airport is 100 km out of the town. The upgrade is no doubt dramatic but the approach roads are not complete so getting from the airport is a challenge. This has made us decide to go by train on the ac chair car. There is a deluxe version leaving at 06.00 with breakfast supplied but this involves such an early start from here around 05.00 that we have opted for the later less elite train at 07.15 which takes a little longer but does the same basic journey.

Life is much cooler and more pleasant here than in steamy humid Chennai. Bangalore was one of the favorite Army postings in India. In those days it was known as the Garden City. Now it is one of the high tech centres of India. The latest indication being the new airport which is on an international standard and so well out of townˇV100 km away so a major challenge to get to and from. Sometime there may be a commuter link but that is in the distant future! No sweat for the IT people but for the hoi poloi much more a budget challenge. The ideal would be to retain the closer city airport for budget airlines and less facilities but who knows? Montreal in the end has given up on Mirador and reverted to the older place close to town.

We are comfortable at Ken Gnanakanˇ¦s ACTS' guest house where we are well known and accepted. Prema his wife sends around food from their kitchen. This is a last indulgence before the boot camp style of the Outreach Training Centre where we are going for two weeks.

Janette has been looking at the good quality Indian style ready made shilwar and kumiz suits for use in the various locations we shall be visiting. The Gnanakanˇ¦s who normally provide food from their home are on leave so we have been eating out once a day in the local restaurants around here. Today at a Panjabi place, last night Chinese, Hyderabadi biryani the previous night and the first evening a mixed approach. There is an eclectic mix here with even hamburgers and the like available and popular with the younger set who throng the malls of these parts. Bangalore is very up market and quite Westernised in format and taste. Good employment for the educated means money to spend on easy to eat take out style food.

It is proving to be a somewhat relaxed time between teaching venues. There is no Internet link either wireless or cable so we go out to Cafes to do the needed.

On Sunday we went out to the Baght Singh Meeting run by Dr Prabakaran. The message was well received. We shared in the communal meal afterwards although some exceptions were made for the VIPs!
